ImageA cordial welcome to our visitors at the German national organisation of straw bale building (fasba)!

We want to built sustainably for the future!

With straw bales you can built easily highly insulated and environmentaly sound houses.
Strawbales get infilled between wooden posts as insulation material and plastered afterwards. It is also possible to pile up the bales as loadbearing structure like over dimensional building bricks in a plastered wall to bear the loads of ceilings and roofs.

Healthy and environmentaly sound

Building with straw bales provides triply for climate protection:

  1. The plants extract carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the athmosphere
  2. The low amount of production energy (approximately 100 time less than mineral wool and polystene) provides for a low output of the climate damaging carbon dioxide (CO2)
  3. Due to the excellent insulation qualities of straw bales (passiv house standard is possible) there is less energy consumption and therefor less emission of toxic substances and of carbon dioxide (CO2) during the lifetime of the building. Wood, clay and straw as buildingmaterials don't contain pollutants, are sustainable and are almost limitless available. The clay plaster on the walls and the ceilings provide an agreeable and healthy and room climate.

When the building family can help filling in the straw bales and plastering the straw bale walls it is possible to generate a very low cost living space.

A method of construction with tradition

Worldwide in countries like the USA, Kanada and Australia the use of straw bales are allmost common place. Hundrets of examples, some of them more than 80 years old proof: with this building method it is possible to errect inexpensivly durable multy story houses.

Also in Europe for example in France, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and even in the new Eastern European countries as Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungaria and Slowakia this new building idea is getting established.

In Germany the interest for straw bale building techniques is steadily growing. Until now more than 80 legaly constructed living houses have been edified and also a couple of production halls and many little demonstration cabins.

In Germany this construction method is getting more and more popular and since FASBA has obtained a gerenal approval for most cases it is no legal problem to get the necessary building permission.
The national organisation of FASBA is still active in developing additional tests for special regulations for various construction methods, that are not yet standards, like for example load bearing constructions.
